Gestapo is short for Geheime Staatspolizei, which means Secret State Police in German. It was a secret police force established under Nazi Germany in 1933, with Heinrich Himmler as its director. Its primary role was to identify and eliminate dissent against the Nazi party, including political opponents, Jews, communists, homosexuals, and other marginalized groups. The Gestapo was known for its brutal, indiscriminate tactics and its use of torture and violence to extract information and confessions. It was dissolved after the fall of Nazi Germany in 1945.
